The Institute was established in 1971 and after 25 years of existence has become one of the leading research centres in PNG.

The institute promotes biodiversity conservation and offers landowner and environmental awareness programs. 

Surrounded by green forest vegetation and enjoying a cool highland climate, the institute's facilities consist of laboratories, a natural museum, insect and butterfly ranch, a zoo, teaching facilities and guesthouse accommodation for visitors.

The Insect Farming and Trading Agency- Bulolo 
Established in 1978, this agency now has 1500 village suppliers from throughout PNG. This eco -friendly alternative village based industry has proven to be a great success over the last 20 years.

Bundum Conference Centre
 
 

Located en route to Mumeng along the Wau- Bulolo road about 50 minutes drive from Lae is the Bundum Conference Centre.

This is a Lutheran Church run centre that has accommodation and conference facilities to cater for church groups, businesses, NGOs and government groups. 

Houses are traditionally built but they are fitted with the modern comfort of solar lights. Rooms are fitted with double bunk beds and single beds.

The centre also serves as an example of an Eco-tourism centre in the province. Meals are provided with most of the produce coming from the centre's own gardens. This centre can accommodate up to 150 guests.

Momahi Tours & Guesthouse
 

Owned by Kwina Ambang, Momahi Guesthouse is a new quaint little guesthouse opened in mid-2006. It is situated at 12 Mile along the Okuk Highway and is a remarkable rural getaway for adventurers and nature lovers amongst a tropical setting of heliconias and palms.

Kwina offers affordable accommodation with a very personal service for the adventurous traveller. Group bookings are also very welcome.

Momahi is appointed with 18 rooms in various sizes ranging from self-contained single and double with fan, to airconditioned single and double rooms sharing common bathroom facilities - all very well maintained regularly.

Momahi also offers great Tours for guests as well as other visitors. Two of Kwina's more popular tours are the "Erap River Getaway".

Their Tour Escorts will pick up visitors from their accommodation for a full day excursion up the Erap River. Upon arriving at the rural village of Erap, tourists are welcomed in a traditional royal manner by an Erap cultural group.

From there the tourists frolic in the Erap River Rapids, with a challenging river tube ride, or a mountain bike ride up to Mountain Lookout to take in the panoramic vista of the Markham Valley. Tourists may either bring their own lunch or a prepaid picnic basket is provided by Momahi Tours. Enjoy the great outdoors the Erap way at your leisure vefore heading back to the hustle & bustle that is Lae City.

Kwina's other popular tour is "Lae City Tours" that is available daily from Monday to Saturday departing at 9.00am each day. The tour will pickup from your desired destination with a brief tour around the City, then to the National Botanical Gardens to visit the Entomology Division of the Forest Research Institute.

The next stop is the Lae War Memorial Cemetery where guests may peruse through the serene location of the celebrated Allied Forces war-dead.

Then onward to Rainforest Habitat to view the unique wildlife fauna and flora within the Habitat enclosure. To end, tourists are then entertained to dine at Momahi Guesthouse amidst evergreen tropical gardens of orchids, vanilla & exotic fruits of PNG.

Guests may leisurely explore the gardens and locally handcrafted artifacts before the journey's end to return to your original pick-up destination.

Mukulapmang Guesthouse
 

Kesengen village is situated at 1200m in the mountains of the Boana District. Mukulapmang Guesthouse can be reached by a 2 hour drive from Lae and then a challenging 2 to 4 hour bush walk through tropical forests.

It is a beautiful village with lots of good walking in the area. Birds of Paradise and many different species of wildlife can be seen on the walks.The scenery is breathtaking.

Mukulapmang Guesthouse is made of bush material. The Guest House will accommodate gorups of up to 10 people in single beds and all bedding supplied.

All meals provided and are prepared with traditonal local produce. Rice, meat & fish are also added. Tea, coffee & milo are abailable with each meal. You may need to pack a sweater for the evenings as it can be quite cool.

Security for vehicles is provide at the base of the mountain. The Guest House can supply carriers, please request this service when making your booking.


Finongan Guesthouse

You may have already visited some parts of PNG, but if you have not come to the Finongan Guesthouse then you haven't seen it all.

Located less than 60 kilometres northwest of Lae, Morobe Province are the beautiful and regged Sarawaget Mountains.

And in the heart of the Sarawagets is the Finongan Guesthouse.

Come an experience the warmth hospitality of the Finongan people and the unique tal-framed ornamentation of the Sombolong cultural dance and the beautiful wildlife scenery.

Ramu Guesthouse

Located within the ground of the Ramu Sugar Limited. It enjoys views of the great Ramu valley and its grassland plains.

The guesthouse caters for company guests and also outside visitors when rooms are available. The Guesthouse offers modern standard rooms with affordable rates.

Leron Plains Village Guesthouse

Situated high on the grassland plains above Leron River gorges, this guest house offers village-type accommodation and is also suitable for camping groups from churches, NGOs, as well as government and private organisations. 

Access is by a 3 hour 4WD trip from Lae followed by a one and a half hour trek to the guest house. It is recommended for those who prefer hard adventure trekking and hiking.

Bird watching and rubber rafting are some of the activities that can be arranged. It is also recommended that you bring your own food and water supply, although local food is available at the guest house.
